Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – Nick Jonas Takes On Diabetes!

Nick Jonas attends MTV’s Concert To Benefit Lifebeat at the House of Blues in West Hollywood on August 27, 2011 NEW YORK., N.Y. -- At 13, Nick Jonas was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. “I had an emotional breakdown since I really had no idea what diabetes was all about. I wondered, ‘why me?’ Then I asked myself, ‘why not me?’ and realized that I might be able to help other kids with diabetes.”
For the past 6 years, Nick’s mission has been to help and inspire other kids dealing with juvenile diabetes. The teen icon gives freely of his time to charity events to raise awareness and also visit young diabetic kids. Healthy Hollywood applauds Nick Jonas!
Halle Berry and Sharon Stone are also afflicted with diabetes. Yet, it’s not just the rich and famous who suffer, over 21 million children and adults in the United States are living with diabetes, and one in three Americans will develop diabetes in their lifetime! That’s some serious numbers.
November is American Diabetes Month, so Healthy Hollywood hopes to shed a little light on this serious (and increasingly common) condition. “There is a genetic component to diabetes, which would make a person more likely to develop the condition and an environmental part which involves diet and lifestyle,” reveals Nicolette Pace, founder of NutriSource, and she specializes in diabetes self management training. Nicolette adds, “In other words, your genes are carrying a gun and your diet can pull the trigger.”
Despite popular belief, there isn’t an “eat this and you’ll get diabetes” link. However, adult onset diabetes can be set-off by overall weight gain and lousy eating habits. “If you look at a typical American diet you will see that the majority of what is eaten leads to weight gain and obesity which quickly escalates to metabolic problems, pre-diabetes, and finally full-blown diabetes,” adds Nicolette.
However, for those suffering with diabetes, it is good advice to eliminate as many hidden fats and sugars from their diet. “Fighting diabetes has a lot to do with managing your overall carbohydrate and calorie intake. If weight gain has been an issue it must be immediately stopped. Therefore, the addition of foods that will fill you up with smaller portions will be key. These include whole plant foods (vegetables, fruits, grains, beans etc.) as their water and fiber content leads to greater fullness from the weight of food,” suggests Nicolette.
Studies also suggest working in lean protein foods to stabilize hunger and provide necessary nutrients. Reversing diabetes is possible in its early stages with a strict program.
Nicolette shares with Healthy Hollywood 3 eating tips diabetics should follow…
1. Keep a record of what you eat, how much you have eaten and your blood sugar to highlight the relationship.
2. Learn how to read a food label and know what to look for when you are buying prepared foods.
3. Limit processed foods by developing a shopping list in advance to incorporate as many whole foods as you can. This meal-planning tip will help free you from buying impulse foods.

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Look Fabulous At 60 Like Helen Mirren!

Helen Mirren glams it up in red at “The Debt” screening in New York City on August 22, 2011
NEW YORK., N.Y. -- Yes, it’s true; you can look (and feel) amazing at 60 and beyond! Gone are the days when women over 60, 50, or even 40 are simply overlooked and rarely thought of as sexy and sensational.
At 66, Oscar winner Helen Mirren was named “Body of the Year” over the summer in a L.A. Fitness survey. She beat out other (much younger) beauties, like Jennifer Lopez and tush-terrific Pippa Middelton. Proving to all that age is just a number.
Mirren has shared her age-defying secrets are the home shape-up game Wii Fit and a good pair of stilettos. “Four-inch platforms give you great height and make your legs look unbelievably long.”
Sixty-plus celebs like Raquel Welch, Jane Seymour, and Jane Fonda are also great examples of being in your 60s and gorgeous. Certainly inspiring to any of us ladies worried about losing our sex appeal as we age. “We are living in 2011, where we have more knowledge about health and wellness than ever before,” attests Andrea Warshaw-Wernick, who founded the website Fabulous at 60. “If we ladies eat healthy, work out regularly, and change our mind set on how to live, we can even feel better than we did when we were younger,” adds Andrea!
Younger women need to get on track with a solid wellness program now – if they want to look good 20-plus years later. Andrea suggest stepping up your workout regimen to at least 3 times a week, eat steamed or lightly sautéed veggies, limit your drinking to one glass of wine a night – stay from sweets and fast food—and stop smoking!
However, the real secret to being forever young is the right outlook. “Attitude is half the battle in staying young by the time you are sixty,” reveals Andrea, who also adds, “My motto is ‘Keep On Moving.’ I feel young and practice what I preach, so my body and mind stays young forever. I love the fact that I look as best I can and I feel terrific because I eat right and constantly exercise. Working everyday, having a passion or just being busy is another important ingredient to feeling young, staying motivated and being happy.” Let’s hear for female power!

Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – Sheryl Crow’s Food Fight!

Hard to believe – but Thanksgiving is right around the corner. It’s one of my favorite holidays – simply because it brings family together in a major eating fest. I love turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans – lots of love at the table – bring it on – Healthy Hollywood is feast-ready!
Yet, it’s important to take time out and give thanks for our bounty! Not everyone is so lucky to have food on the table. “It is so important for everyone across the country to dare to be conscious and aware of the struggles of those around them,” reveals Sheryl Crow in Eating Well magazine.
The Grammy Award-winning singer is working to stamp out hunger through the hunger-relief charity, Feeding America. Over 37 million people annually are fed thanks to the generosity, dedication, and hard work of this network of food banks. Want to donate or start a virtual food drive? Eating Well magazine celebrates do-good stars in their November/December issue. Lauren Bush and Jeff Bridges are also singled out for their support of fight hunger charities.
Lauren Bush-Lauren:
Lauren has been instrumental in providing more than 64 million meals worldwide. She co-founded FEED Projects, which is supported by the sales of FEED’s canvas bags, which are designed by Lauren. “I thought creating a ‘FEED bag’— made of the same burlap as the World Food Program’s food drop bags— would be a compelling and tangible way for people to connect with the fight against hunger,” Lauren reveals to Eating Well. A single FEED 1 bag ($60) provides a year of school meals for one child in Africa. For more information, head to www.feedprojects.com
Jeff Bridges:
The Academy Award-winning actor takes on childhood hunger with Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign. The organization is dedicated to providing food that will help kids lead healthy, active lives. Bridges adds, “Our kids aren’t hungry because we lack food… our children are hungry because we’ve lacked a big-picture strategy to connect them to the nutritious food they need to grow and thrive.” Want to get involved? Take the No Kid Hungry Pledge or donate at www.nokidhungry.org
