In 2005, while filming “Syriana” (a film which earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar), the actor suffered a spinal injury, one that was so severe he contemplated suicide due to the pain.
“I was at a point where I thought, ‘I can’t exist like this. I can’t actually live,’” the actor recalled in the current issue of Rolling Stone, hitting newsstands today.
“I was lying in a hospital bed with an IV in my arm, unable to move, having these headaches where it feels like you’re having a stroke, and for a short three-week period, I started to think, ‘I may have to do something drastic about this,’” Clooney continued. “You start to think in terms of, you don’t want to leave a mess, so go in the garage, go in the car, start the engine. It seems like the nicest way to do it, but I never thought I’d get there. See, I was in a place where I was trying to figure out how to survive.”
Much has since changed for the 50-year-old actor, who is currently starring in “The Ides of March,” with Ryan Gosling and has “The Descendants,” opening on November 16. According to Clooney, the latter movie is bound for some Oscar love.
“If it’s not nominated for Best Picture, I’ll be shocked. It’s that good,” he told the mag.
As for current girlfriend Stacy Keibler, the usually private actor said he’s fine with her having an active Twitter account.
“She can do whatever she wants,” he said. “I rarely tell anybody what they should be doing with their life.”
